These icons are free Windows XP style icons designed to replace the real XP icons in applications where freely reusable icons are required.
Each image has a corresponding 256 x 256 PNG image of the original artwork and an ICO file containing 32 bit and 256 colour icons in sizes 16 x 16, 24 x 24, 32 x 32 and 48 x 48. The 32 bit colour icons have a drop shadow applied and have a matte finish as in Windows XP (as opposed to the glossy appearance of Windows Vista and some Unix desktop environments).
The nature of most of the icons makes them ideal for compositions when used with iICO. In light of this, few if any composite icons are included in the collection. The large PNGs can be used in the same way, and are more suited to being faded and used as background in applications (or can be put back into iICO and sized down if you prefer the icons without a drop shadow).
These icons do not have a license agreement or restrictions on use, other than the requirement that they are not unversally placed under a license to the contrary and that nobody other than the author takes credit for creating them. This does not affect how they are used/distributed in applications under alternative licenses.
The collection is extended regularly as more and more icons are created. So far it contains:
